Sprint HTC Touch With a Broken LCD
By wfrench | March 3, 2008
A broken LCD on my HTC Touch with no insurance from Sprint and I almost had a good experience with a cell phone company! In November I got an HTC Touch from Sprint and boy was I excited! When I bought the phone I though I had signed up for the insurance plan, but after calling to get a replacement I was told otherwise. My phone is pictured to the left. Sorry about the quality, I was a little upset when I took it. At that point I had just gotten off the phone with Sprint customer service.
At this point I’m sure you are wondering why you are still reading, well I refer back to my original statement, “I almost had a good experience with a cell phone company!” After a couple of phone calls and visiting three Sprint stores I ended up with a brand new Touch for $55. It took a bit of talking but here is the abridged version.
After a couple of phone calls, one representative told be I had to go to a Sprint store for server. The funny part is once I got the the Sprint store he told me that I would have to call *2 for support, although this is a different store. He also mention that I could get the phone repaired at a Sprint repair center. That was my next approach.
My wife and I were going to watch my nephew play little league so I stopped at the repair center by their house. This is the first part of the story where I “almost” had a good experience. The representative took my phone and told me that he could have it repaired in an hour and it would cost me $55. I was shock, happy, but still a little skeptical. When I returned to the store after a couple of hours I was given a number. I sat around patiently for 30 minutes waiting for my number to be called, then was told there was nothing that they could do. I would have to bring my phone back in three days. This store was an hour and a half away from my house so that obviously wasn’t an option.
My final course of action was to take my phone to the Sprint repair center by my house. This line was twice as long as the first center I went to. However, once we got a representative it was crazy. She was helpful, she listened to me, and she gave me a new phone for $55. Apparently, you can take any sprint phone into the repair center and they will give you a refurbished phone for $15 - $55 depending on what was wrong with your phone. Because my phone was so new there weren’t any reconditioned phones available so they gave me a BRAND NEW ON, in the box! WOW.
What’s the moral of the story? Don’t by Sprints insurance. The insurance has a $50 deductible, but it only cost me $55 to get it repaired. Sprint insurance costs $7 per month. I think I made out on this one!
